Wedding Stripes!

July 9th, 2012 by Glendalough Manor

One of my new loves in wedding decor are stripes!  You can find stripes anywhere from stationary and table linens to bridesmaid dresses.  Brides this year are not afraid of mixing patterns and colors to create dimension and interest in to the overall design of the wedding.

Stripes are a perfect addition to most any wedding adding some modern elements to a traditional color palette.  For example, a black and white wedding can seem like a simple color palette but when mixed with stripes it becomes interesting and bold in design.

Stripes are also showing up in bridesmaid dresses.  Thick or thin stripes look great on most body types as long as you choose the right silhouette.

Even guys are joining in on the action and wearing striped bow ties, ties or pocket squares.

I also love using striped fabric in the flowers to wrap the bouquets or boutonnieres.

Wedding cakes are joining in on the stripe trend taking a traditional cake and making it unique with stripes!

What do you think about wedding stripes?  Tell us your thoughts!

Americana Inspired Wedding: Red, White and Blue

July 4th, 2012 by Glendalough Manor

Happy 4th of July!

Today being the 4th of July I wanted to give you some inspiration for an Americana Inspired Wedding!

You don’t have to get married around the 4th to use this theme since it can be a perfect choice for a wedding in the Spring or Summer.  The color palette goes beautifully together (shades of red, white and blue) and can be paired with rustic elements to give a vintage, classic feel.

Outside weddings are perfect for this theme giving a more casual comfortable atmosphere to the ceremony and reception.  This color palette may lend itself to a more casual feel, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be beautiful and elegant.  I think an Americana Inspired wedding looks best by using shades of blue and red as well as different textures and patterns, like stripes, checks and solids, to complete the overall look.

I love the idea of using a blue color story for the ceremony/cocktail hour and using all red and white details for the reception like below.

One of the best parts of an Americana wedding is the food! Any down home cooking will do!! Brides are choosing BBQ, mini sliders, mac and cheese, and of course delicious dessert stations!

One of my favorite dessert station ideas that is a perfect match for this theme is an assorted pie station with cherry, apple and blueberry pies….yum!

Lastly, you can’t have an Americana wedding (or 4th of July wedding) without a little sparkle!

Tell us what you think about this Americana Inspired Wedding!

Happy Planning and Happy 4th of July!

Wedding Fun and Games

July 3rd, 2012 by Glendalough Manor

I think we have all been to a wedding where the bride and groom took a very LONG time to take their photographs after the ceremony!  Even after eating plenty of hors d’ oeuvres you still felt bored waiting for the reception to begin.

Well, there is a solution to this problem that will allow your guests to have tons of fun even before the reception begins…games!   Who wouldn’t want to attend a wedding that has games?  I know I would and I think many of your guests would feel the same way.  Games before or during the reception set the mood for the evening.  Your guests know immediately that your reception will be a good time!

During the “cocktail” hour is a perfect time to introduce games, especially for an outside event like one at Glendalough Manor. Like I said before, guests have to wait for your family pictures and what better way than games to keep them occupied.  Games like horseshoes, bean bag toss and badminton are some of the most popular to play outdoors.  I love the idea offering a variety of games to play to keep guests interested!

Check out this ah-dorable idea to play mini golf and along the way find out cute tidbits about the newlyweds!

Or use silhouettes of your faces for a fun game of corn hole!

Another fun outside game is croquet. Check out the cute photographs of the bridal party trying out all the games!

If you choose a venue that is indoors there are also ways to incorporate games.  Each table can have a different board game with a cute sign to “play while they wait”!  Games like scrabble, tic-tac-toe, checkers or trivial pursuit are great board games to incorporate!

Some brides are leaving all the games to do during the reception between the bride and groom!  One of my favorite games to play is to have the bride and groom take off one of their shoes to give to each other.  They sit opposite each other and answer questions by raising the shoe of the one they think fits the question best.  For example, “Who is the best driver?” , etc.   Neither one can see what the other is holding up and it can be very entertaining for all of the guests!

Would you use games at your wedding?  We want to know!

Leave us your thoughts!

Light Up with Lamps!

July 2nd, 2012 by Glendalough Manor

Have you ever thought about using a lamp for a wedding centerpiece? At first, I thought the idea of a lamp centerpiece would look cheesy but I was surprised to see how much I liked this unique look!

There are many reasons lamps make great centerpieces. Lamps and lamp shades come in all different shapes, sizes and colors so the possibilities are endless on the final look of the centerpiece.

Of course lamps look beautiful when paired with flowers.  Some lamps are glass on the bottom and can be filled with flowers to match the wedding.

Another way to pair lamps and flowers is to pair place flowers at the base of the lamp shade.  I love the height that the lamp shade brings to table!

Depending on the lamp you choose and how you accessorize the lamp can give a totally different look and feel.  A modern approach is to choose a modern lamp like the one below and use vases of flowers around the base of the lamp. Or for a vintage look use vintage bud vases to surround the lamp base.

Some brides are opting to use smaller lamps either alone or in a group.  The patterned or colored lamp shade is used instead of flowers.

What do you think about lamp shades for weddings? Let us know your thoughts!

Makeup Tips for Your Wedding Day

June 27th, 2012 by Glendalough Manor

On your wedding day, you want your makeup to look at it’s best!   Your wedding day is not the day to try something new and over the top.  The key to great makeup is to look like yourself but the best version of you!

Whether you have hired a professional to do your makeup or decide to do your own, make sure to have a trial run to ensure you get the look you want. Think about the overall look you want for your wedding day while considering the time of day and theme.   If you have a makeup artist, make sure to communicate these important details so they can help in determining the best look for you.  After the trial decide what you like or dislike about the finished look.  Don’t forget to take a picture of your trial to make sure it photographs well!

Below are some tips to ensure your makeup looks flawless on your wedding day!

1. The most important piece of advice I can give you is to pick one feature on your face you want to accentuate.  Whether you choose your eyes or lips, playing up both features can make you look overdone.

2. Get your brows and/or lip waxed at least 48 hours before the wedding.  You don’t want redness or irritated skin to show!

3. Wear waterproof mascara and water resistant liner!  This is a must!!  Tears will be shed on this special day and the last thing you want is mascara or liner running down your face.  Also, waterproof and water resistant products are great for outside weddings to ensure there is no smudging or creasing around your eyes in the heat.

4. Wear a lip liner under your lipstick or gloss to help it last longer and to prevent your lipstick from bleeding.

5. Choose a shade of lipstick a shade or two brighter than your normal lipstick. Lipstick that is too light can make you look washed out in pictures.

6. If you are have oily skin or are having an outside wedding oil blotting sheets will be your best friend!  Just a few dabs on your face throughout the day you reduce any shine and give a nice matte finish to your face.

7. Choose the right shade of foundation!  Make sure your foundation not only matches your face but also your neck.  You wouldn’t want to take pictures where your face looks darker or lighter than the rest of your body.  Keep in mind when choosing a foundation that powder can be aging in daylight, so try a cream foundation and cover with neutral colored powder for staying power.

8. Avoid foundation with SPF or zinc oxide on your wedding day. In photographs this can make your face much lighter looking than it is in person.

9. Consider using an eyelash curler or fake lashes to help your lashes look thick and beautiful.  If you opt for fake eyelashes you may want to leave that to the pros to put on.

10.  Lastly ask your Maid of Honor to carry a small clutch with your wedding day makeup essentials for touching up.  Include lipstick and lip gloss, oil blotting sheets, face powder and of course tissues for all those sweet tearful moments!

I hope these tips help to make your wedding day makeup as flawless as your wedding!

Family Heirloom Weddings

June 26th, 2012 by Glendalough Manor

All brides are trying to make their wedding special! One of the easiest ways to make your wedding more meaningful is to incorporate family heirlooms.  Isn’t family one of the most important things surrounding a wedding?  You are essentially joining the two families together and by using family items, however small, it can make a huge impact.  Adding family heirlooms can make a simple item, like a table centerpiece, mean so much more.

The inspiration for this blog came from the wedding on June 16th at our very own Glendalough Manor where the bride and groom, Elizabeth and Bradley, had a beautiful vintage inspired wedding that incorporated family heirlooms throughout the reception.  They used the families’ antique silver trays, silver and glass vases and other collectables as the centerpieces for the guest tables.  The incredibly talented florist DGL Designs used these family heirlooms to create amazing centerpieces.   DGL Designs added an assortment of ivory and green flowers including peonies, hydrangea, roses, and lisianthus creating unique centerpieces that were different on every table.

Elizabeth and Bradley also used their parents and grandparents newlywed pictures to surround their gorgeous four tiered wedding cake. What an amazing idea and tribute to the family!  This wedding was a classic vintage affair in every sense of the word!!

There are many ways to create your own vintage wedding like Elizabeth and Bradley.  Start by asking family if they have any items from their wedding or heirlooms you may use.  You may be surprised at how much they have to give you! Plus, they will be honored you want to include them in your special day.

For example, brides are using family brooches or other jewelry such as pearls to adorn their wedding bouquets.

Even a handkerchief or locket can add an extra special touch to your wedding bouquet.

Another way to incorporate family memorabilia is to wear the same jewelry that your mother or grandmother wore on their wedding day.

If you are lucky enough to have a wedding dress that was passed down you can decide to display the dress or even wear it!! Other items you can borrow include garters, shoes, veil, or headpiece.

I hope this has inspired you to use some of your own family heirlooms at your wedding. Stay posted for more amazing pictures from Brandelyn Photography of this vintage inspired wedding!

Wedding Trend: Gourmet Jello Shots?

June 25th, 2012 by Glendalough Manor

Weddings have changed over the last few years with brides and grooms bringing more personality and creativity to their wedding.  Couples are finding unique ways to ensure their guests have a good time and what better way to do that than to have Jello Shots!!

At first, I was very skeptical about this idea. Jello shots I have seen in the past did not resemble anything I would want for a wedding.  As you can see, these jello shots look nothing like the ones of old.  Say goodbye to the cheap plastic cups and welcome a whole new world of jello shots with lots of presentation!  Jello Shots are using fancy molds to create unique shapes and are served in glass shot glasses, on small serving dishes and even sticks are being used (think cake pop)!

They are not only amazing to look at but a great addition to any bar.  I love the idea of having these passed during your cocktail hour instead of a signature drink.  I think guests would love the creativity of the jello shots and they would also taste great!  Plus they can come in almost any color to match the wedding and can be made to taste just like some of your favorite drinks!

Here is a cosmopolitan Jello Shot…Yum!

A rainbow Jello Shot for all the Rainbow Inspired Weddings!

And a Cucumber Mint Julep Jello Shot!

What do you think about these Gourmet Jello Shots?  Would you serve them at your wedding?

2012 Fall/Winter Wedding Colors

June 20th, 2012 by Glendalough Manor

Are you having a Fall or Winter wedding and are can’t decide which colors to use?  You are in luck! Pantone has come out with their Fall/Winter 2012 Fashion Report with the hottest colors in fashion.

This years Fall/Winter Fashion Report has a color for everyone!  There is a mixture of bright colors and muted tones to fit any brides personality.    If you want to be on the edge of fashion trends with your wedding colors, try combining some of these colors to make your perfect color palette!

Here are some of my favorite color combinations:

French Roast and Tangerine Tango have to be the the most bold and beautiful color pairing for Fall.  I love how the Tangerine Tango is so bold against the French Roast.  You can also pair this with Honey Gold to richen the color palette.

My favorite new color combination for fall is Titanium and Ultramarine Green!  I am in love with this color green and Titanium is the perfect grey tone to compliment this deep yet vibrant green.

Blush tones are a new way to capture the essence of winter!  Pairing Rhapsody, Titanium and Rose Smoke are beautiful together showing off a soft, romantic feeling.

Honey Gold and Olympian Blue are also a perfect Fall/Winter color combination.  The Honey Gold is the perfect neutral to the brightness of the Olympian Blue.

Which color combination is your favorite?  We want to know!

Romantic Wedding Flowers: Peonies

June 19th, 2012 by Glendalough Manor

One of my all time favorite flowers are Peonies and who wouldn’t love this big beautiful flower? It is no surprise that peonies are one of the most popular flowers for bridal bouquets.

If you are a girly girl like me, peonies are the ultimate bridal flower.  This fluffy, ultra romantic flower looks amazing by itself or paired with other types of flowers.  In my opinion, it is the ultimate in classic beauty and vintage style.

One of the best thing about Peonies are their size.  Just a couple of stems of Peonies can make a stunning centerpiece.

Brides take note….. these classic flowers are mostly available in late March/early April through July so if you want these flowers you have a small window to get married! Many brides have been known to plan their weddings in these months for the sole purpose of using this coveted flower.

Another great characteristic of the Peony is the different looks one flower can give.  You can leave the bloom closed, partly open or open all the way to give a totally different look to your bouquet.

And peonies come in many different colors like pink, fuchsia, lilac and of course classic white.

What do you think about peony bouquets?  Leave us your thoughts!

Chevron Wedding Details

June 18th, 2012 by Glendalough Manor

You may already know of my love for chevron anything (home decor, fashion and now weddings) from my previous blog about chevron cakes but I wanted to share how easily you can incorporate chevron details in to your wedding.  What I love most about the chevron pattern is how versatile it is.  It looks great at a casual affair or an elegant, formal wedding.

I hate to repeat myself, but I truly believe the best weddings don’t forget about the details.  Using splashes of the chevron pattern in the details will give a modern look to any color palette.

When using chevron details don’t be afraid to mix colors and patterns to compliment each other.  The texture of the different materials and patterns can make for an interesting and beautiful tablescape.

One of the easiest ways to use chevron for your tables is to add a chevron napkin or table runner!

Look how modern, yet simple these tables can look by just adding a chevron patterned table runner!

Wedding stationary is a great way to incorporate the chevron pattern. Chevron looks great on invitations, programs and place cards. You can also use the same stationary to decorate your guest favors.

Some grooms are even wearing chevron bow-ties, ties or pocket squares!

Brides are even joining in and wrapping their bridal bouquet in the same chevron pattern to match their groom!

What do you think about chevron wedding details?  Tell us what you think!
