History

St. Kevin Stained Glass Window Glendalough Manor became troubled in the lack of facilities that the south side of Atlanta had to offer. There were plenty of restored homes and hotels; but an events center whose sole purpose was events was no where to be found. This large untapped market sparked an interest in their minds, and thus began the history of Glendalough Manor. After choosing the location of Tyrone GA for the new events facility, the business owners, builder, and architect wanted to continue Tyrone’s original heritage.

Once choosing a site for the new venture it was time to come up with a name. The land which is situated on the corner of Dogwood Trail and Highway 74 is in the town of Tyrone, Georgia. This small town was settled in the late 1800’s by Irish railroad workers. They named the town Tyrone, because of the lands similarities to Tyrone, Ireland and in order to honor their homeland. The area of Tyrone originally belonged to the Creek Indians and was settled by Irish farmers in the late 1800's. The town of Tyrone was then incorporated on August 18, 1911, and was named “Tyrone” by the Birmingham and Atlantic Railroad when they laid tracks here on 1907 due to the similarities of it’s Irish decedent’s homeland. It was said that the land around here looked like that of Tyrone, Ireland.

Wanting to keep the heritage of Tyrone, the owners researched Ireland in order to find a suitable name for the new events facility. In their quest, they came across the town Glendalough, Ireland in the county of Wicklow. The English name of Glendalough comes from the Irish Gleann Da locha which translates to “The valley of the two lakes.” It was here that St. Kevin founded a monastery and hospital in the sixth century. This area is said to have the feeling of peace and tranquility. In the height of the cotton years, Tyrone became quite a large town and after the civil war eight confederate veterans formed a group called “The Fayette County Confederate Veteran's Association". The membership of the association increased to as many as two hundred Confederate Veterans; many noted people from all over the state would attend the event. This event made quite an impact on the Tyrone natives, for it lasted until 1968 when interest played out. The Old Soldiers reunion put Tyrone on the map, so to speak, to many people who had never heard of Tyrone before hand. This event is considered to be a very important part of Tyrone's past and history.
